One dead in Kashmir grenade attack

NEW DELHI, India (CNN) -- An apparent grenade attack by militants killed one civilian and wounded 14 others Tuesday in the southern Anantnag district of Indian-administered Kashmir, Indian officials said.

A patrol of the paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force in the town of Kulgam was the apparent target of the grenade, thrown from a moving vehicle, officials said. But the grenade missed its target, instead landing in a group of bystanders.

Two members of the police patrol were among the injured, officials said.

A similar attack last week -- in which a grenade lobbed from a passing vehicle missed a truck carrying an army patrol -- wounded 12 civilians in Bejibehara.

Early Tuesday in Indian-administered Kashmir, one soldier from the Indian army's counter-insurgency unit was killed and eight others were critically wounded when their bus hit what appeared to be a land mine. That incident occurred in the village of Kachdoora near the town of Shopian in southern Kashmir, police said.

It was not clear who placed the apparent land mine or how long it had been in place.

The disputed region of Kashmir, where a bloody separatist insurgency has raged for years, spurred a military standoff earlier this year between nuclear neighbors and long-time adversaries India and Pakistan that almost resulted in war.

India blames Pakistan for stoking a revolt by Kashmiri separatists and aiding militants crossing the border to attack targets in Indian-ruled Kashmir. Pakistan denies the charge, but has vowed to crack down on militant groups.
