MANILA, Philippines -- Security forces in the Philippines say they have arrested a local man they believe acted as a courier for an Indonesian man arrested over the weekend on suspicion of having links to Osama bin Laden's al Qaeda network.

The arrests brings to five the number of people detained in the Philippines since last week for alleged links to the network.

Police say the latest suspect is being interrogated at army headquarters on the southern island of Mindanao.

They believe the man acted as "one of the couriers and runners" of a suspected leader of the militant Islamic group Jemaah Islamiah arrested in Manila last week.

That arrest was itself followed by the detention of three other men after the discovery of more than one ton of explosives in the southern city of General Santos.

Authorities say they think the men were part of a plot to bomb western targets in Singapore.

In December police in Singapore arrested 15 Jemaah Islamiah members suspected of plotting to blow up a shuttle bus ferrying U.S. military personnel, and to bomb U.S. naval vessels along waters off the island state.

Two were later released.

Malaysia has also arrested groups of alleged Islamic militants over the past month, linking them with al Qaeda and also saying they had cells in Indonesia.
