LONDON, England -- Right-wing Dutch politician Pim Fortuyn died on Monday after being shot at least six times as he left a radio interview on the outskirts of Amsterdam. Here is a chronology of some recent killings of politicians in Europe: February 6, 1998 - FRANCE - Claude Erignac, Prefect of Corsica, the top representative of the French state on the island, shot dead in Ajaccio by two young men. (Full story) September 12, 1998 - ALBANIA - Azem Hajdari, a senior leader of Albania's opposition Democratic Party, shot dead by a gunman outside his party's office in Tirana.
September 21, 1998 - ALBANIA - Ahmet Krasniqi, 50, a leading member of the self-styled ethnic Albanian government in the Yugoslav province of Kosovo, shot dead by gunmen at his home in Tirana. (Full story) November 19, 1998 - RUSSIA - Outspoken State Duma deputy Galina Starovoitova shot dead in her apartment building in St. Petersburg by two unknown attackers. (Full story) November 9-10, 1998 - ARMENIA - Deputy Defence Minister Vagram Khorkhoruni shot dead outside his home in the capital Yerevan. January 11, 1999 - KOSOVO - Enver Maloku, the head of the ethnic Albanian information centre in Kosovo, shot by unknown gunmen near his Pristina home. (Full story) January 11, 1999 - SLOVAKIA - The former head of Slovakia's gas industry and economy minister, Jan Ducky, shot dead outside his home in Bratislava. February 9, 1999 - ARMENIA - Artsun Margaryan, the commander of Armenia's Interior Ministry forces and a deputy interior and security minister, shot dead and his body dumped on a motorway. May 20, 1999 - ITALY - Massimo D'Antona, an adviser to Italy's labour minister, shot dead in Rome. A document purporting to come from the Red Brigades claimed responsibility. Oct 21, 1999 - TURKEY - Former Turkish culture minister and prominent secularist academic Ahmet Taner Kislali killed in bomb attack possibly carried out by Islamic militants.
Oct 27, 1999 - ARMENIA - Gunmen kill Armenian Prime Minister Vazgen Sarksyan and two other leading members of parliament, mowing them down in a hail of bullets after bursting into the chamber. Feb 7, 2000 - YUGOSLAVIA - Yugoslav Defence Minister Pavle Bulatovic shot dead by unidentified attacker in a Belgrade restaurant. (Full story) May 7, 2000 - SPAIN - Jose Luis Lopez de Lacalle, 62, a political commentator for the pro-government daily El Mundo and a founding member of a leading Basque peace forum, was shot dead in the Basque town of Andoain. May 31, 2000 - MONTENEGRO - Goran Zugic, security adviser and close ally of Montenegrin President Milo Djukanovic, shot dead by unknown gunman in the courtyard of his apartment block in Podgorica. June 4, 2000 - SPAIN - Gunman shoots dead city councillor Jesus Maria Pedrosa in the city of Durango, near Bilbao.
Nov 21, 2000 - SPAIN - Former Health Minister Ernest Lluch shot dead in Barcelona. Police blamed ETA. (Full story) April 12, 2001 - POLAND - Former Polish sports minister Jacek Debski, who ousted scandal-prone communist-era soccer bosses, shot dead outside Warsaw restaurant. (Full story) April 13, 2001 - RUSSIA - Adam Deniyev, an official in Chechnya's pro-Moscow administration, killed by a bomb blast at a private television studio. (Full story) May 6, 2001 - SPAIN - Manuel Gimenez Abad, 52 and president of Spain's ruling Popular Party (PP) in the northeastern Aragon region, gunned down in the city of Zaragoza. (Full story) Aug 17, 2001 - FRANCE - Prominent Corsican nationalist Francois Santoni shot dead as he left a wedding reception in the southern Corsican village of Monacia d'Aullene.(Full story) Sept 27, 2001 - SWITZERLAND - A man in police uniform burst into a session of the local assembly of the Swiss canton of Zug and opened fire, killing 14 people and himself and wounding 15. (Full story) March 19, 2002 - ROME - Top Italian government adviser Marco Biagi, strong proponent and one of the authors of controversial labor reform, shot dead by two gunmen outside his home in Bologna. (Full story) March 21, 2002 - SPAIN - Juan Priede, a local Socialist party politician, was gunned down in the northern Spanish town of Orio by two assailants. (Full story) March 27, 2002 - FRANCE - A lone gunman opened fire at the end of a town council meeting in northwest Paris, killing eight people and wounding 19. The gunman, Richard Durn, was arrested but committed suicide the next day. (Full story) May 6, 2002 - NETHERLANDS - Dutch anti-immigrant politician Pim Fortuyn, expected to win big share of the vote in May 15 elections, shot by unidentified gunman in Hilversum and died shortly afterwards.
