Reactions to Saturday's bombing

(CNN) -- Here are several reactions to the suicide bombing in an Orthodox Jewish neighborhood in central Jerusalem on Saturday evening. The terror attack killed nine bystanders and injured dozens more.

'Israel knows how to defend the people of Israel'

'Israel knows how to defend the people of Israel'

"This has nothing to do with warfare. This has nothing to do with national liberation. This has to do with the murder of innocent Jews coming back from their evening prayers. The state of Israel knows how to defend the people of Israel, and will do so."

-- Dore Gold, adviser to Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon

'What does the occupation expect of us?'

'What does the occupation expect of us?'

"What does the occupation expect of us? What does the world want of the Palestinian people? Do we not have the right to respond? Has the victim not the right to respond to those who are beating him?"

-- Hassan Yousef, Hamas leader

'Ongoing war on terror'

"Our policy now is not necessarily to react every time to a terrorist attack, but rather to have an ongoing war on terror until we will be able to put an end to it."

-- Arie Mekel, Israeli government spokesman

'Natural reaction'

"First of all, it's early to say who is behind the operation in Jerusalem. But everybody knows that the Israeli attacks on Palestinian refugee camps in Jenin and Balata is continuing and this operation comes as a natural reaction of the Palestinians to the Israeli attacks and the Palestinians have the right to defend themselves."

-- Ismail Abu Shanab, Hamas leader
