Two killings reported on the West Bank

NABLUS, West Bank (CNN) -- A Palestinian child and an Arab Israeli woman were reported to have been killed in separate incidents of violence on the West Bank on Friday.

The Palestine Red Crescent Society reported that a 7-year-old Palestinian boy was killed by Israeli gunfire at the Askar refugee camp near Nablus, the Palestine Red Crescent Society said. The Red Crescent said the boy, Amid Abd Alsamad abu Sief, was on his way to prayer with his father, who was critically wounded.

An Israeli army representative said the report is being checked.

In the other incident, Israeli military sources said an Arab Israeli woman was shot in the back and killed as she drove up to the Baka al-Sharkiyeh junction from the direction of Tulkarem.

Who fired the shot that killed her was not known, the sources said. The woman was driving a car with Israeli license plates.

Earlier, Israeli tanks and armored vehicles rolled into the Jenin refugee camp, the scene of intense fighting last month, the Israel Defense Forces said. Israeli military sources said the IDF arrested around 20 Palestinians in both the refugee camp and the town of Jenin. Israel considers Jenin an enclave of terrorists.

The suspects had fired at the Israeli soldiers, the IDF said, but there was no word of any casualties.

Also, near the Israeli settlement of Dugit in Gaza, the IDF said it prevented an infiltration attempt by an armed Palestinian when Israeli forces shot and killed the man.

Israeli forces fired on the man near the settlement's entrance around midnight Friday. He threw several hand grenades at the soldiers, according to the IDF. The forces found a Kalashnikov rifle and ammunition on the man's body, the IDF said.

At Jenin, Israel tanks and forces entered the refugee camp around midnight, the IDF said, and started withdrawing to the outskirts of the camp at first daylight.

Israeli forces continued to operate in the town of Jenin, according to IDF. Palestinian residents reported seeing Israeli tanks and troops enter the town early Friday.

The Jenin refugee camp was the scene of fierce fighting last month during Operation Defensive Shield, Israel's campaign to eliminate what it said was a terrorist infrastructure in the West Bank.

The IDF has said 23 of its troops were killed in that fighting. The Palestinian Red Crescent said the bodies of 53 Palestinians were recovered.

The United Nations was going to send a fact-finding mission to Jenin to determine what happened at the devastated camp, but the mission fell apart after Israel raised objections to the manner in which the investigation would be conducted.
