Solo sailor launches luxury yacht
LONDON, England (CNN) -- The first woman to sail solo non-stop and unassisted around the world has launched a fast ocean cruising yacht.
Aimed at the prestige yachting market, Australian Kay Cottee will put the first of her yachts into the water in April 2002 and it will be shown at a Queensland boat show in May.
Cottee made history on June 5, 1988, when as a 34 year old she became the first woman to complete a solo, non-stop and unassisted circumnavigation of the globe.
She sailed more than 22,000 nautical miles alone for 189 days on board her 11.2 metre yacht.
Her latest venture, the Kay Cottee 56, was designed by Cottee and leading yacht designer Scot Jutson. It was built at Cottee's factory in Australia.
She said her design was based on a lifetime spent in and near yachts. She personally "worked the tools" alongside the shipbuilders and had daily input into the construction of the yacht.
The Kay Cottee 56 includes three double rooms with ensuites, a cocktail bar and viewing ports below the water line in two cabins for watching marine life.
