Ronaldo back as Brazil beat Turkey
ULSAN, South Korea (CNN) -- Ronaldo announced his return to the international stage with a goal as Brazil came from behind to earn a 2-1 win over Turkey, who finished the game with nine players. But the four-times champions only sealed victory in Ulsan with a penalty three minutes from the end, scored by Rivaldo after Alpay Ozalan hauled down substitute Luizao. The offence looked outside the box but the defender, who had been booked in the first half, was sent off. Turkey's frustration boiled over in injury time when Hakan Unsal was also shown red for kicking the ball at Rivaldo who fell to the ground clutching his face, even though the ball hit his legs.
Ronaldo, who has endured a miserable series of injuries since France 98, had equalised five minutes into the second half after Turkey had stunned Brazil by taking the lead. Ronaldo stretched to convert Rivaldo's cross as the two forwards again linked up to mesmerise the Turkish defence. It was a stylish performance from Ronaldo who received a standing ovation when substituted 17 minutes from the end. After sustaining Brazilian pressure, Turkey had broken out to score a high class goal on 47 minutes. Yildiray Basturk floated a pinpoint pass over the defence and Hasan Sas fired home from an angle. It was a sensational end to an entertaining first half in which Brazil created most of the chances but Turkey refused to cave in and exposed gaps in Brazil's defence.
Marcos had to dive at Hakan Sukur's feet on 20 minutes and a minute later Tugay Kerimoglu struck a shot which was deflected onto the top of the bar. However, Turkey's lead was shortlived as the yellow shirts streamed forward. Juninho hit the side-netting after an hour and a minute later Rivaldo headed in only to be ruled offside. The striker should have scored on 40 minutes after Ronaldo's cross found him unmarked. But keeper Rustu Recber parried his firm header. Turkey coach Senol Gunes said: "We came here with pride and we played the game with pride. There is an injustice in the result." Brazil coach Luiz Felipe Scolari had named defensive midfielder Gilberto Silva, 25, for his sixth international appearance to replace captain Emerson, who was ruled out of the tournament after dislocating his shoulder in training.
