Two off as Germany beat Cameroon

Ramelow gets his marching orders

SHIZUOKA, Japan (CNN) -- Miroslav Klose became the World Cup's top scorer as Germany beat Cameroon 2-0 to progress to the last 16 and send the African champions home.

But the game was marred by two red cards and 12 other bookings as each team finished with 10 men.

Germany emerged on top of the group with Ireland second after their 3-0 win over Saudi Arabia in Tuesday's other Group E game. (Match report)

Needing a draw to ensure qualification, Germany went into half-time 0-0 and a man down after midfielder Carsten Ramelow was sent off.

But substitute Marco Bode made Cameroon pay for missed chances, breaking the deadlock five minutes after the break with a left foot shot into the corner.

Cameroon's frustrations boiled over after Lauren headed against a post. And as they headed for an early exit, substitute Patrick Suffo was sent off after bringing down Michael Ballack.

Then 12 minutes before the end, Klose met Ballack's cross to head the second -- and his fifth of the tournament -- and secure qualification for the knockout stage.

In the end Germany had few worries but they had been nervous when Ramelow saw red for his second booking after tripping Samuel Eto'o as the Cameroon forward sprinted towards the penalty area on 40 minutes.

Cameroon, needing a win to stand a chance of progressing, had wasted the best chances of a tight first half. Salomon Olembe was unable to beat keeper Oliver Kahn after running clean through on goal. Then unmarked captain Rigobert Song powered a header wide.

German coach Rudi Voeller picked the side that started in last week's 1-1 draw with Ireland following an 8-0 demolition of the Saudis in their opening game.

Cameroon managed only a 1-0 win over Saudi Arabia after a 1-1 draw with Ireland.
