KWANGJU, South Korea -- South Korea have become the first Asian team to make the World Cup semifinals after beating Spain 5-3 in a penalty shootout after the game had finished 0-0.

Joaquin Sanchez missed his kick for Spain leaving Korea's captain Hong Myung-Bo to shoot his side into the history books. They will meet Germany for a place in the final.

South Korea had not won a game at five previous trips to the finals. Their victory sparked another massive celebration in cities across the country.

Their coach, Guus Hiddink, said: "I can't describe the feeling. I'm so happy for the boys. More dreams have come true. We'll have a little glass of champagne now and what comes tomorrow comes tomorrow."

"I am just sorry we couldn't go any further."

The match had been tight and the nearest either side came was when Fernando Morientes hit a post in extra-time.

South Korea shaded Spain for possession, but seemed to lack penetration up front, although striker Ahn Jung-hwan was a handful for the Spanish defence.
