LOS ANGELES, California (CNN) -- He depicted Marilyn Monroe in Day-Glo yellow and pink, Mao Tse-tung in yellow, blue and green and Campbell's soup cans in standard red and white. Artist Andy Warhol lifted potent images from pop culture and elevated them to the level of art.
Now, 15 years after his death, the quirky artist is being celebrated at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles where a massive retrospective exhibit recently opened featuring 250 of Warhol's most famous images.
Economists are predicting the blockbuster art show will bring $130 million into L.A.'s coffers as art lovers from around the world congregate in the city of angels to pay homage to the late artist.
"If you want to know all about Andy Warhol, just look at the surface of my paintings and films and me, and there I am. There's nothing behind it," Warhol once said.
The Andy Warhol Retrospective runs through August 18.
