TOKYO, Japan -- Japan's largest mobile operator NTT DoCoMo and Singapore Telecommunications have struck an agreement to develop services for third-generation (3G) mobile technology.

The 3G services being rolled out by various operators in the Asia Pacific give mobile phone users high-speed Internet access and video, music and data streaming.

The two carriers said Tuesday they aim to integrate their 3G networks, based on W-CDMA (wide code division multiple access) technology, to boost roaming between Japan and Singapore.

They said they will also cooperate on advanced wireless local area network (LAN) services.

DoCoMo CEO Dr Keiji Tachikawa said he believed the partnership would help expand mobile multimedia services in Asia based on W-CDMA technology.

"Interoperability is key to providing customers with seamless mobile multimedia services," he said.

"The collaboration will help us take a step towards addressing some of the key concerns regarding 3G such as evolving common standards, roaming issues and compatibility of handsets," SingTel Mobile CEO Lucas Chow said.

SingTel, which is majority owned by the Singapore government, is the largest telco in Southeast Asia.
