Tonya Harding wins one in court

Story Tools

VANCOUVER, Washington (Court TV) -- A judge ruled last week that former Olympic figure skater Tonya Harding did not violate her probation by riding in a car with two unopened cans of beer.

Police stopped the car for speeding early last month, but Harding was not the driver. At the time, Harding was on five years' probation for failing a sobriety test in April following a crash that left her pickup truck in a ditch.

Harding also got into legal trouble last January, when she was evicted from her home for not paying her landlord $4,530 in rent, late fees and other costs. She had been living in the ranch house since August 2000 but had not paid rent between November 2001 and January. In May 2000, Harding was sentenced to three days in Clark County jail for assaulting her former boyfriend with a hubcap.

Harding's name became synonymous with scandal after rival figure skater Nancy Kerrigan was assaulted by Harding's boyfriend before the 1994 U.S. National Championship and the Winter Olympics.

Hernandez accused of attacking elderly man with golf club

MIAMI -- San Francisco Giants pitcher Livan Hernandez was arrested Jan. 8 after allegedly trying to hit a 65-year-old man with golf clubs.

Hernandez, 27, who lives in Miami, was renting a warehouse from Francisco Martinez with plans to start a car accessories business. When the two men began arguing over repairs that needed to be made to the building, the dispute became physical. Hernandez pushed Martinez to the ground, then pulled golf clubs from his car and tried to hit him, police said. Martinez suffered a minor cut to the back of his head.

But Hernandez and his friend David Montoto, who was present during the incident, say Montoto stepped in between the two men during the argument. They say Martinez threw punches at Montoto, and Montoto retaliated by pushing him to the ground. Hernandez claims he tried to leave the scene peacefully, but the dispute escalated when Martinez shouted racial slurs at him. He admits grabbing the golf clubs, but says Montoto stepped in.

Martinez and Montoto were not charged, and Hernandez was arrested after detectives interviewed several witnesses, police said.

Hernandez is scheduled to be arraigned on Jan. 29 on charges of aggravated assault and battery on the elderly. He is free on $10,000 bond. He could face a maximum of 10 years in prison if convicted.

Hernandez started his career with the Florida Marlins where he was named the World Series most valuable player as a rookie in 1997. He was traded to the Giants in 1999 and lost both starts for the team in the 2002 World Series. Hernandez has a career record of 69-69 with a 4.42 ERA and 817 strikeouts.

Boxer arrested on drug-related charges

BULLHEAD CITY, Arizona -- Former featherweight boxing champion Johnny Tapia was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia after a standoff with police at his home.

Police went to Tapia's house Jan. 10 looking for his cousin Raymond Whiting, who was wanted for aggravated assault and weapons charges in New Mexico. Police say the men refused to leave the house, so officers forced the door open after about an hour.

When police entered the house they found drug paraphernalia on Tapia and issued him a summons to appear in court on Jan. 29. Whiting was taken into custody, and another man was arrested on a drug possession charge.

Tapia then drove back to his other home in Las Vegas and reportedly collapsed. He remained on life support at University Medical Center until Monday and was treated for head trauma.

Tapia, whose motto is "Mi Vida Loca" or "My Crazy Life," was hospitalized two years ago for a drug overdose after a suicide attempt.

Tapia, a five-time champion in the flyweight and featherweight divisions, has a career record of 52-3-2 with 28 knockouts. He was stripped of his featherweight title for fighting Marco Antonio Barerra on November 2 instead of making his mandatory defense. He lost the fight by unanimous decision.

Rodman in trouble again

NEWPORT BEACH, California -- Former NBA star Dennis Rodman is accused of committing another flagrant foul.

The flamboyant forward was arrested January 10 for allegedly assaulting a woman he is reportedly dating. Police responded to the call at about 2 a.m. and said the woman had a cut above her lip. They went to the house to question Rodman and said they could smell alcohol on his breath.

Rodman was arrested and released on $25,000 bail. The incident remains under investigation.

Police have gone to Rodman's home more than 70 times for noise violations and other incidents. In October 2001, a jury ordered Rodman to pay $80,000 for rubbing dice on craps dealer James Brasich's bald head, stomach and groin.

Another civil case settled in August. Rebecca Mardis sued Rodman for assault after he smashed her camera on the floor and lifted her in the air for taking his picture in a casino.

Throughout his NBA career, Rodman was fined a total of $193,500 for violations, including kicking a cameraman in the groin and accusing the Mormon religion of being racist during the 1997 NBA Finals in Salt Lake City.

Rodman played 13 years in the NBA with the Detroit Pistons, San Antonio Spurs, Chicago Bulls, Los Angeles Lakers and Dallas Mavericks. He finished his career with five championship rings and seven rebounding titles.
