(CNN) -- Former Baylor basketball player Carlton Dotson was indicted Wednesday on murder charges in the killing of former teammate Patrick Dennehy.
The indictment, returned by a grand jury in Waco, Texas, could clear the way for his extradition from Maryland.
Dotson, 21, has been held in a Maryland jail since his July 21 arrest in the killing of Dennehy, 21, who went missing in mid-June.
Maryland law requires an indictment for a defendant before the state will agree to extradition. Last week, a Maryland judge set an extradition hearing for October 14.
The indictment alleges Dotson killed Dennehy "on or around June 12."
Dennehy's body was found in a field about five miles outside Waco nearly six weeks after he was reported missing. An autopsy revealed he had been shot twice in the head, both times above his right ear, at point-blank range.
Investigators have found a 9 mm pistol in the same area where Dennehy's body was found, according to authorities.
In an affidavit given to police, an informant alleged Dotson shot Dennehy during an argument while the two were shooting guns in a field.
