LONDON, England (CNN) -- The writer of Oscar-nominated movie "The Full Monty" is premiering his latest film on the Internet, in a world first.

Simon Beaufoy's latest film "This is not a love song" is being streamed online as it debuts simultaneously in a handful of cinemas.

The release of the new low-cost movie, which was made for under 500,000 ($800,000) and shot in less than two weeks, will be closely watched by filmmakers who find it difficult to find distribution deals for their productions.

And British movie bosses are keen to see how much interest there is in watching movies on the net.

"Films will soon be able to reach audiences in a completely new way and that by embracing the possibilities of the digital world, we are offering a whole new form of entertainment to new audiences," Paul Trijbits, head of the New Cinema Fund, which is responsible for this groundbreaking event.

"This is not a love song" has been described as a gritty "Deliverance"-style film, acted by a cast not widely known outside the UK. The film is about two fugitives on the run from a group of vigilante farmers after an accidental killing on a remote farm.

Director Bille Eltringham shot the film digitally rather than using film, a technique used on recent hit "28 Days Later" that was a huge hit in the United States and has grossed more than $65 million worldwide.

The film is being streamed at www.thisisnotalovesong.com and available for download.
