(InStyle) -- The event: The 17th annual Soul Train Music Awards on March 1, in Pasadena, California.

THE ATENDEES

J. Lo, Mariah Carey, Justin Timberlake, LL Cool J, Chris Rock, Missy Elliott, Nelly (R&B/soul or rap album of the year winner), Paula Abdul and more.

WHO WON WHAT

Hosted by Queen Latifah and Arsenio Hall, the Soul Train Music Awards were a breath of fresh air after the recent barrage of movie-awards shows. (But really, how many times do we need to see Nicole Kidman win for best actress? And the Oscars are still weeks away.)

The Quincy Jones Award for Outstanding Career Achievements was bestowed upon both LL Cool J and Mariah Carey (Dionne Warwick was initially announced as the recipient of this award. Guess they changed their minds?).

J. Lo, in the throes of a whirlwind publicity tour for "Maid in Manhattan," gave LL his award. Nelly took home the Sammy Davis Jr. Award for entertainer of the year.
