(CNN) -- Coffee-table books are beautiful.
The reproductions of photographs or illustrations are usually top notch, the writing is lyrical and elegant, even the paper is of a fine quality.
But they're darned hard to read in bed -- unless you have arms like Arnold Schwarzenegger's.
Well, that's why they call them "coffee-table books." They look great on a coffee table or on a couch. In fact, they look so impressive there's sometimes no reason to read them whatsoever.
But there are several books well worth reading -- or even pondering in detail -- this holiday season: books on the Civil War, books on fashion, books about heroes, books about bombs, even books about a book ("The Lord of the Rings," though in this case it's more about the movies than the literary work).
CNN has a few suggestions for your literary enjoyment.
