Samoans sweep to the top of Pool C
PERTH, Australia (Reuters) -- Samoa crushed Georgia 46-9 in Perth to go top of World Cup pool C above England and South Africa after collecting their second bonus point. But the Samoans, who have 10 points, have yet to meet the two pool heavyweights. England are second on nine points after their 25-6 victory over the Springboks on Saturday. Samoa, who led 24-9 at the interval, were made to wait for an hour by the battling Georgians for their bonus-point winning fourth try scored by captain Temo Sititi. They scored six tries in all and flyhalf Earl Va'a notched a personal tally of 21 points. After the game Namibia coach Dave Waterston asked World Cup officials to cite Ireland lock Paul O'Connell for foul play. O'Connell was penalised for stamping on Namibia lock Archie Graham in the second half. A furious Waterston told a news conference he had referred the match to the disciplinary panel for further investigation. "We don't normally cite players when we lose but we regard this incident as of such a magnitude that we had no alternative," Waterston said. "I regarded the incident as unsavoury and I thought it was important enough to cite although I understand they (citing commissioners) had already picked it up." Copyright 2003 Reuters.
