BRUSSELS, Belgium -- Belgian tennis star Kim Clijsters has announced her engagement to Australian two-time grand slam winner Lleyton Hewitt.
"Lleyton has surprised me," said 20-year-old Clijsters on her official Web site, following the pair's romantic boat ride around Sydney Harbor.
"He invited me for dinner on a boat and suddenly unveiled a ring and earrings. I didn't know what hit me, but I'm very happy about it.
"In Australia, being engaged means a lot," added Clijsters, who won nine WTA Tour titles this year and is currently ranked second in the world behind compatriot Justine Henin-Hardenne.
"But there are no concrete plans (for a wedding date). But I'm extremely happy with my early Christmas present."
Hewitt, 22, won the U.S. Open in 2001 and last year's Wimbledon crown, reaching No. 1 in the world. He also helped Australia win this year's Davis Cup after returning from injury and is currently ranked 17th in the world.
"It was a special evening together in one of the most beautiful cities in the world," Hewitt told Sydney's Daily Telegraph. "We couldn't have asked for more."
