Ajax calls off Roma Chivu move in cash row
ROME, Italy -- The transfer of Romanian defender Cristian Chivu from Ajax to Roma has collapsed after the Italian club failed to secure a bank guarantee to cover the proposed $19.7 million fee. "Ajax is bringing Cristian Chivu back to Amsterdam," the Dutch club said in a statement. "The Italians did not manage to fulfill their contractual obligation to gain a bank guarantee." Chivu, who is now expected to report for Ajax training this week, signed a five-year deal with Roma in July.
