MADRID, Spain -- Real Madrid beat Argentine champions River Plate 3-1 in a match played to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Alfredo Di Stefano's arrival at the Spanish club.
Young striker Javier Portillo scored twice for Madrid while former River midfielder Santiago Solari opened the scoring as the home side lifted the 25th Santiago Bernabeu Trophy, named after Real's legendary late president.
Luis Gonzalez scored the Buenos Aires side's late consolation goal.
Madrid rested several first team players, but Zinedine Zidane, David Beckham and Roberto Carlos brought real star quality to the show.
But it was reserve midfielder Solari who opened the scoring with a brilliant solo effort midway through the second half, beating two defenders before slamming home a powerful shot.
Reserve striker Portillo made the most of his chance standing in for Ronaldo by making it two five minutes later and adding his second after a neat passing exchange with defender Raul Bravo.
Buenos Aires-born Di Stefano, now 77, began his career with River before leading Real Madrid to five straight European Cups in the 1950s, scoring in every final. He is considered one of the legendary club's greatest ever players.
