AC Milan and Rivaldo part company
MILAN, Italy -- AC Milan have released Brazilian World Cup winner Rivaldo from his contract. The 31-year-old forward has not featured for the European champions this season and had asked for his contract, which ran until 2005, to be torn up. "The agreement has been reached in a friendly and serene manner," Milan vice-president Adriano Galliano said in a statement on the club's official Web site. "It was a short spell but it was very important because we have won a lot over a marvellous year." Rivaldo joined Milan on a free transfer from Barcelona at the start of last season but has failed to make an impact at the San Siro. "I might not have had the good season at Milan I had expected but I don't want to blame anyone," Rivaldo said. "It was a personal choice I have taken after talking with the club, and I think it was the best one." Earlier in the week Spanish newspapers linked him with a move to join Brazilian teammates Ronaldo and Roberto Carlos at Real Madrid, but Rivaldo said he was considering a move to England. "My appearance in the European Super Cup final makes me ineligible for this season's Champions League," he said. "According to the new rules I can join a European club starting from January. I may have some chances to play in England, but I will evaluate them carefully."
