Absent Beckham is ordered to rest
MADRID, Spain -- David Beckham has been left out of Real Madrid's squad for the Champions League Group F match away to Porto because of a foot injury suffered at the weekend. The England captain was hurt during the 2-0 defeat at Valencia and says he does not know how long he will be sidelined -- with his nation's vital Euro 2004 tie in Turkey on October 11. Club doctors say the midfielder has acute inflammation of the sole of his right foot and requires physiotherapy and rest. Striker Raul is a doubt. Real captain and joint top-scorer Raul could still face the Portuguese champions if he passes a late fitness test on Tuesday. On a positive note, defender Ivan Helguera is included in the squad after recovering from a throat infection that kept him out of the Valencia game. The Spanish international is likely to be asked to move up to his former position in the center of midfield to cover for the absent Beckham. Real opened their Champions League campaign in style with a 4-2 win over Olympique Marseille at the Bernabeu two weeks ago and lead the group from Porto and Partizan Belgrade, who drew 1-1 in their first match.
