Striker Ailton is joining Schalke
GELSENKIRCHEN, Germany -- Brazilian striker Ailton will become the second Werder Bremen player to move to Bundesliga rivals Schalke at the end of the season,. Ailton is joint top scorer in Germany so far this season with seven goals in eight games and has played a major role in his club's climb to the top of the standings. Defender Mladen Krstajic will also leave Bremen for Schalke next summer when the pair are entitled to free transfers. Ailton has agreed a two-year contract that will be automatically extended by another year if he plays a certain number of games, Schalke said in a report posted on their official website. "Schalke has landed a spectacular coup on the transfer market," the club said of Ailton who arrived in at Bremen in1998 and has scored 67 goals in 144 games. He is a replacement for Belgian striker Emile Mpenza, who was released at the start of the season. Schalke coach Jupp Heynckes said Ailton was "one of the best strikers in the league." He added: "Our intention is to improve our roster and to increase the competition inside the team. I think we've achieved that."
