Fergie in dock for televised spat
LONDON, England -- Manchester United boss Alex Ferguson must appear before an FA disciplinary hearing on Monday to answer misconduct charges after his televised outburst to officials during United's match with Newcastle on August 23. Ferguson angrily confronted fourth official Jeff Winter and referee Uriah Rennie when Newcastle defender Andy O'Brien was not penalized for pulling back Ryan Giggs. It is less than ideal preparation ahead of United's Champions League tie against Rangers two days later. After a shock defeat in Stuttgart in their last match, United can ill afford another reverse against the Scottish champions in a match dubbed the "Battle of Britain." United have meanwhile agreed to pay Sunderland up to three million pounds compensation after luring young French winger David Bellion to Old Trafford in the summer. The package includes a two million pound up front payment and up to a million linked to Bellion's appearances for United, where he has yet to break into the first team. Sunderland are also entitled to a share of any fee United receive if they decide to sell the 20-year-old player. Sunderland chairman Bob Murray, who last season accused United of deliberately unsettling Bellion to try and trigger a move in the January transfer window, said he was happy with the deal agreed between the two clubs. "We are happy with the deal and think it is entirely deserved as we lost an exciting and talented young player," Murray said. Although Bellion's contract at Sunderland expired in June, United still had to pay compensation for his training and development as he is under 23. If clubs cannot agree on the amount in such cases it is settled by tribunal.
