Teplice add to Germany's UEFA woes
PRAGUE, Czech Republic -- Teplice sealed their passage into the UEFA Cup second round after Henrich Bencik's second half goal gave the Czechs a 1-0 win over Kaiserslautern on Thursday. The northern Czech team played defensively for much of the return leg but had little to fear from largely ineffective Kaiserslautern as they completed a 3-1 aggregate win. "We laid the basis of this success in Kaiserslautern where we won," said Teplice manager Frantisek Strada. "As you saw, this was not an easy affair, Kaiserslautern has a good squad. "We played very solid defence, apart from a few glitches, and scored the needed goal." In the 71st minute, forward Jan Rezek picked up a straight pass in the box and crossed in front of an empty net to Bencik, who easily scored from close range. Bencik could have made it 2-0 six minutes later but his powerful shot from the edge of the box was deflected by keeper Tim Wiese. Kaiserslautern's defeat capped a miserable week for Bundesliga sides after Hertha Berlin and Hamburg SV were also dumped out of the competition on Wednesday. But Schalke held their nerve to join Borussia Dortmund in the next round. Substitute Mike Hanke scored late in the match to give Schalke a hard-earned 1-0 victory over Kamen Ingrad Velika and secure his team's place in the second round. Hanke headed in a cross from Dario Rodriguez after 77 minutes and Schalke advanced 1-0 on aggregate after dominating the home leg.
