Thompson is a Celtic Euro absentee
GLASGOW, Scotland -- Celtic midfielder Alan Thompson has been ruled out of next week's Champions League clash against Belgian side Anderlecht with calf trouble. The 29-year-old had a scan after suffering the injury in Saturday's 4-0 league win over Aberdeen and manager Martin O'Neill expects him to be missing for two weeks. "Alan had a terrific last season for us and then he picked it up exactly where he left off when we started the new campaign," O'Neill told the club's website. "He is a very influential player for us and there is no doubt that his injury is a serious blow for us." The setback has also ended Thompson's hopes of winning a place in England's squad for their international friendly with Denmark on November 16 at Old Trafford, Manchester. Scottish Premier pacesetters Celtic are bottom of their Champions League section on three points. But they are only two points behind leaders Bayern Munich and one adrift of Olympique Lyon and Anderlecht, who are third after beating Celtic 1-0 in Belgium last week.
