Holders Bayern rely on keeper Kahn

MUNICH, Germany -- Holders Bayern Munich needed the help of the crossbar and keeper Oliver Kahn to make the third round of the German Cup 7-6 on penalties against Second Division Nuremberg.

Kahn saved the penalty of Marek Nikl to clinch victory for Munich shortly after Andreas Wolf was denied Nuremberg's winner in the shootout by the crossbar.

The score was locked at 1-1 after extra-time as Michael Ballack failed to clinch victory for Bayern in the 115th minute, missing the empty net from five meters.

Robert Vittek had given Nuremberg an 11th-minute lead from the edge of the area.

The reliable Roy Makaay levelled for Bayern in the 36th, set up nicely by Ze Roberto.

Hertha Berlin also progressed in dramatic fashion to save the skin of coach Huub Stevens 4-3 in a shooutout at Hansa Rostock after Nando Rafael's 120th-minute 2-2 equalizer.

They led from Luizao in the 19th before the Bundesliga bottom club Rostock reversed matters from Marcus Lantz' double in the 63rd and 111th.

Hertha keeper Gabor Kiraly finally saved Gernot Plasnegger's spot kick to the relief of Stevens who had a board ultimatum to either win both games in Rostock (they won the Bundesliga match 1-0 on Saturday) or be fired.

"It was a clear signal from the team that it wanted to work with the coach. We finally had some luck as well. The signs were in the direction of Stevens' farewell. It was the only chance to change things," said manager Dieter Hoeness in defence of the ultimatum.

In other action, VfB Stuttgart stretched their unbeaten season run in domestic football to a dozen games with a 1-0 win at Second Division Wacker Burghausen.

Imre Szabics scored the only goal after 55 minutes.

Werder Bremen fought from 1-0 down to a 3-1 extra-time win over Bundesliga rivals VfL Wolfsburg from Johan Micoud's 25m drive in the 95th and Angelos Charisteas in the 101st.

Cologne needed an 89th-minute winner from Marius Ebbers to prevail 3-2 at Wolfsburg's fourth-division amateurs. VfB Luebeck also advanced into the third round, 3-2 after extra time at St. Pauli Hamburg.
