Heskey brace hits 10-man Blackburn

Story Tools

LONDON, England -- Emile Heskey struck twice as League Cup holders Liverpool overcame 10-man Blackburn 4-3 at Ewood Park to move into the fourth round.

Heskey, who also missed a late penalty, netted with headers after 49 and 61 minutes, both from crosses by Senegal's El Hadji Diouf.

Rovers paid for having defender Lucas Neill sent off against Liverpool for the second time this season.

Neill was red-carded for a professional foul after he clipped the heel of Liverpool's French striker Florent Sinama-Pongolle to concede the 41st-minute penalty from which Danny Murphy made the score 1-1.

The Australian was sent off in more acrimonious circumstances in Rovers' 3-1 home defeat by Liverpool in the Premier League on September 13 after he broke Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher's leg.

Diouf also laid on Liverpool's fourth for Harry Kewell 11 minutes from the end.

Late goals by Dwight Yorke, who had also scored the game's opening goal, and Barry Ferguson, with his first goal for the club, flattered Rovers.

Chelsea overcame a gutsy challenge from Second Division strugglers Notts County 4-2 at Stamford Bridge where Iceland's Eidur Gudjohnsen scored twice for the home side.

Spaniard Gaizka Mendieta scored his first goal for Middlesbrough in a 2-1 win at First Division high-fliers Wigan.

Former Brighton striker Bobby Zamora scored Tottenham's extra-time winner against London rivals West Ham.

And Lee Hughes struck in the extra period as relegated West Bromwich ended Newcastle's interst in the competition with a 2-1 away triumph.

Albion's reward is a lucrative visit from Manchester United in the next round.

Fourth Round Draw

Aston Villa v Crystal Palace

Reading v Chelsea

Tottenham Hotspur v Manchester City

Southampton v Portsmouth

Liverpool v Bolton Wanderers

West Bromwich v Manchester United

Arsenal v Wolverhampton Wanderers

Middlesbrough v Everton

Ties to be played week commencing December 1.
