Kluivert on target in Barca stroll

Story Tools

ATHENS, Greece -- Patrick Kluivert scored with his first touch as Spanish giants Barcelona romped to a 3-0 away win over Greek hopes Panionios in their UEFA Cup second round, first leg, clash on Thursday.

And Scottish Premier League Hearts scored a rare European away win at Bordeaux through Dutch forward Mark de Vries' 78th minute goal -- with Luis Garcia and Xavi also on target for former European champions Barcelona.

Garcia received a 44th-minute pass from the excellent Ronaldinho before cutting inside to drive home a shot that goalkeeper Jaroslav Drobny could only parry into his own net.

Garcia then turned provider after the break as Dutchman Kluivert made an instant impact after replacing Saviola for the second half.

Fellow substitute Luis Enrique forced two good saves from Drobny after replacing Ronaldinho in the 63rd minute.

The Catalans carved out several more chances to add to their lead before Xavi made it 3-0 in the 90th minute.

Primera Liga rivals Valencia look to have it all to do after being held to a goalless draw in Spain against Israel's Maccabi Haifa -- who play their home games on neutral territory.

In Ankara, Mustafa Ozkan missed a first half penalty for Genclerbirligi who then fell behind to Sporting Lisbon in the 50th minute when Brazilian Muniz Da Silva scored with a deflected shot.

The lead was short-lived. Five minutes later Veysel Cihan pounced on rebound off the post to flick it into the back of the net with his first touch after going on as a substitute.

Ties between Utrecht and Auxerre and Norwegian club Valerenga and their Polish opponents Wisla Krakow ended goalless.

Spartak Moscow scored a convincing 4-0 victory against Dinamo Bucharest with Serbia and Montenegro international Mihailo Pjanovic scoring a brace. The other goals came from Maxim Kalinicenko and Alexander Pavlenko.

Gaziantepspor had an equally impressive victory against the strong French outfit Lens.

Defender Devran Ayhan gave the home side the lead a minute from the break before quick goals by Tunisian defender Riadh Bouazizi and Zdravko Ivanov midway through the second half gave the Turks a comfortable win.

In Prague an injury-time goal for each side saw Slavia Prague and Levski Sofia draw 2-2 in a match that saw Slavia's midfielder Karel Pitak sent off late in the second half.

German club Schalke 04 had to come from behind to score a 2-1 victory over Danish club Brondby.

Andreas Jakobsson scored for the visitors in the first half with a speculative shot that was deflected past Frank Rost, but Mike Hanke scored twice in the second half to give Schalke the victory.

Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk from the Ukraine won 2-0 at Croatian club Dinamo Zagreb through goals by Oleg Venhlinskyy in the eighth minute and Roman Maksymyuk six minutes from time.
