LONDON, England -- Arsenal extended their lead at the top of the English Premier League to four points after coming from a goal down to beat North London rivals Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 at Highbury on Saturday.
Former England international Darren Anderton reacted smartly to give Spurs a shock fourth minute lead and it was midway through the second half before Robert Pires equalized after good work by Thierry Henry. Swede Fredrik Ljungberg scored a freak 79th minute winner that deflected off Stephen Carr and over keeper Kasey Keller.
It capped a fine week for Arsenal, who kept their Champions League hopes alive with a late 1-0 win over Dynamo Kiev on Wednesday, but it was tough on Tottenham who are still waiting for their first victory at Highbury since 1993.
"We had a lucky deflection on the winner," said a relieved Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger after watching his strangely out-of-sorts side maintain their unbeaten league record.
"I think Tottenham can feel hard done by. We did score a lucky goal, but I think that was the consequence of all our determination."
Unheralded Charlton moved up to fourth with a 3-1 victory over Fulham in the other London derby. Dane Jonatan Johansson scored two for the home side.
Middlesbrough continued their recent revival with a 2-0 win at Aston Villa, Bolton Wanderers and Southampton drew 0-0.
Second-placed Chelsea face Newcastle United on Sunday, while third-placed Manchester United are also in action on the same day when they travel to Liverpool.
