MADRID, Spain -- Valencia have rejected an offer from Chelsea for Argentine defender Roberto Ayala, according to Spanish media reports.
Valencia president Jaime Orti told the Marca newspaper he didn't want to weaken his team, despite estimated debts of $161 million.
"If they offer more? I can't say what would happen if they increased the offer," said Orti.
"The club's idea is to maintain the side and reinforce it if possible."
Chelsea, who have spent more than $176 million on players since Roman Abramovich took over the club in July, are widely expected to recruit more players when the January transfer window opens.
The London club are currently third in the Premier League, one point behind leaders Manchester United.
Ayala, capped 75 times by Argentina, is widely considered to be one of the world's best defenders.
