WOLVERHAMPTON, England -- A double from Norwegian Steffen Iversen gave bottom side Wolves their first Premier League win for two months and inflicted a first defeat in six games on Leeds under caretaker manager Eddie Gray.
Second bottom Leeds went ahead through Michael Duberry's header but Wolves replied with a spectacular own goal by striker Alan Smith, who lashed Henri Camara's corner into his own net .
Iversen headed the hosts ahead just after halftime and added a late third.
Leeds defender Dominic Matteo was sent off for a bad foul on Lee Naylor midway through the second half.
Despite the victory, history is still against Wolves staying up. No team has ever survived relegation from the Premier League after being bottom at Christmas.
Meanwhile, Manchester City extended their winless run to 11 league games, stretching back to November 1, after a 2-2 draw with Liverpool.
However, they rescued a point in the final minute when former Liverpool frontman Robbie Fowler toe-poked home.
Kevin Keegan's side dominated the first half and led through Nicolas Anelka's penalty on the half-hour, the Frenchman also scoring against his former side.
Liverpool improved after the break and levelled through Vladimir Smicer, before German midfielder Dietmar Hamann volleyed a superb second 10 minutes from time, only for Fowler to save City late on.
Tottenham have joined Wolves and Leeds in the bottom three after a 1-0 home defeat by Charlton.
The only goal came in the 69th minute when on-loan Chelsea striker Carlton Cole was left unmarked to head home a corner.
