U.S. updates East Africa travel alert

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The U.S. State Department has updated its alert for Americans in East Africa, adding kidnapping to the potential terrorist threats against U.S. citizens.

According to the agency's announcement Saturday, Americans should "remain vigilant with regard to their personal security and exercise caution. U.S. citizens and interests abroad remain at risk of terrorist attacks by groups including, but not limited to, those with links to al Qaeda organizations."

The last alert for East Africa was issued in December. The latest announcement expires May 5.

The East African nation of Kenya has been the site of two major terrorist attacks, including the 1998 bombing of the U.S. Embassy in Nairobi that killed more than 200 people, most of whom were Kenyans.

In one of two attacks targeting Israelis in November, suicide bombers hit an Israeli-owned resort hotel in the Kenyan port city of Mombasa, killing 10 Kenyans and three Israelis. The same day, two missiles were fired at but missed an Israeli charter jet taking off from that city.

Authorities said the threat to aircraft by terrorists using shoulder-fired missiles continues in Kenya.
