(CNN) -- Police investigating a spate of decades-old killings in the Seattle area found traces of human remains Saturday, according to the King County Sheriff's Department.
The investigators found the remains in an area about 25 miles (40 kilometers) east of Seattle, where they had searched last month but found nothing because of standing water, according to Detective Kathleen Larson.
It is still too early to determine if the remains are one of six missing women believed to have been among the 49 victims of the so-called Green River killings that took place in the early 1980s in western Washington State.
The killings took place between 1982 and 1984. The first bodies were found on the banks of the scenic Green River, south of Seattle.
In recent weeks, the Green River Task Force detectives have uncovered remains at two other sites in Seattle, identifying one of them as 16-year-old Pammy Avent.
Gary Ridgway was arrested and charged with the killings in November 2001. He has pled not guilty and it is unclear if he is cooperating with authorities in their search for more remains.
