Errant bomb suspected in Marine death

Story Tools

(CNN) -- A U.S. Marine was killed and eight other U.S. service members were injured Sunday morning in an apparent "friendly fire" incident in a military exercise along the northern coast of Djibouti, the military said in a statement.

The explosion "may have been caused by a bomb dropped from a B-52 Stratofortress that landed near forces at Godoria Range," said the statement, issued from Camp Lemonier, Djibouti.

Two service members received minor injuries, were treated and returned to their units. The other six injured service members were taken to a hospital.

Two CH-53E Super Stallion helicopters parked near the range were damaged in the accident, the cause of which was under investigation.

U.S. troops have been training for anti-terrorist missions in Djibouti and using the small coastal country as a base to search for al Qaeda members in the Horn of Africa.
