Cabbie held for axing prostitutes
BEIJING, China (Reuters) -- Chinese police have arrested a Beijing taxi driver who they say killed and dismembered five prostitutes.
Police say Li Pingping, 41, killed the women because they had an easier time earning a living than he did, state media reported on Tuesday.
Li allegedly had sex with the women he picked up at nightclubs before killing them with his wife as a witness.
Police said his wife even helped in one of the murders, the Xinhua news agency reported. Police found the bodies in a garbage dump near Li's home, it said.
Chinese media, unrestrained by the strict contempt of court laws of the West, often quote police confirming a defendant's guilt or confession or giving grisly details of a case before it has come to court.
Li is the latest in a string of cases of accused serial killers in China, including another cab driver known in the media as the "Taxi Devil" believed to have killed six female passengers, a garbage recycler sentenced to death for killing competitors and a migrant worker charged with murdering 17 teenage boys.
