(CNN) -- Twenty people are feared to have drowned in a flash flood in northern India.
Authorities say the victims were aboard a bus submerged the rushing waters as it crossed a causeway over a river.
They say the rescued another 20 people from the roof of the bus and are still searching for any possible survivors.
"There were probably more than 40 people in the bus. We have no idea what happened to the rest," an official at the Nalagarh police station in the Himachal Pradesh state told Reuters by telephone.
Officials blame heavy rains in the Himalyan mountain range for the flooding.
The bus was submerged near Nalagarh about 100 km (60 miles) southwest of Shimla, the state capital.
