ISLAMABAD, Pakistan (CNN) -- Two suspected al Qaeda operatives were killed and a third managed to escape during a firefight with Pakistani troops in the tribal areas near Angooradda.
Intelligent sources Tuesday told CNN the three were trying to enter Pakistan from Afghanistan.
They opened fire when a Pakistani army patrol tried to stop them.
In the exchange of fire, two of the suspects were shot and killed but one managed to run away, intelligence sources told CNN.
The two dead suspects are Arab but their identities and nationalities were not known. None of the Pakistani troops were injured.
Eight suspected al Qaeda and Taliban guerrillas were killed and 18 others arrested in a raid by Pakistani troops last month in Angooradda, across the border from a small U.S. base at Shkin in Afghanistan, Reuters reports.
Pakistan, a key ally in the U.S.-led war on terror, has deployed thousands of troops along its 2,500 kilometers (1,520-mile) border with Afghanistan, hunting Taliban and al Qaeda members.
It says it has arrested more than 500 al Qaeda and other militants in the past two years.
