Mosque blast in India

Story Tools

NEW DELHI, India (CNN) -- Security is tight in the western Indian town of Parbhani after an explosion ripped through a mosque, injuring at least 26 people.

Friday's blast occurred after prayers on the last day of Ramadan in the town of Parbhani in Maharashtra state, about 185 miles (300 km) east of the state's capital Mumbai, formerly Bombay.

Eyewitnesses told police that three men on separate motorcycles drove up to the Mohamad Diya mosque around 2 p.m. (4 a.m. ET) and threw explosives inside the Muslim house of worship, according to Parbhani's director general of police S. M. Shangari.

Police fear the incident could spark religious violence in Parbhani, a predominantly Muslim town in the mainly Hindu country.
