Blasts rock Thai-Myanmar border

BANGKOK, Thailand (CNN) -- A series of five separate blasts near the Thai-Myanmar border have left at least four Myanmar nationals dead, Thai officials say.

The first blast occurred at 3:00 a.m. (2000 GMT) and the last at 8:00 a.m. about seven kilometers (4.3 miles) on Myanmar's side of the border in and around the town of Tachilek.

It is not clear whether the explosions were from bomb or grenade attacks or from unexploded ordnance that litters the region.

The blasts caused a brief suspension at the crossing between Tachilek and the Thai district of Mae Sai in Thailand's northernmost Chiang Rai province.

But operations returned to normal later on Wednesday and the incidents have not affected cross border trade or movements, Thai government officials told CNN.

There have been several reports of blasts in the region in recent years.

A blast at a Tachilek hotel last May killed at least one person. No motive or cause has been established.

Seven people were killed in a bomb blast a month earlier at the Thai-Myanmar Friendship bridge which crosses into Thailand Tak province. The blast has been linked to ethnic militias fighting against Myanmar's junta rule.
