Strong quake shakes Philippines
(CNN) -- An earthquake measuring 6.6 has hit the central Philippines, killing a child and collapsing several buildings, officials said.
The strong quake struck at around 1:14 a.m. local time (1714 GMT) near Samar, Philippines, about 555 km (345 miles) east-southeast of Manila.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said damage and strong aftershocks could be expected but that it could not confirm any so far, The Associated Press reported.
One child was killed and a school building collapsed near the town of Can-avid, Neri Amparo, chief of the operations center of the Office of
Civil Defense, said.
Local disaster officer Luisito Moscosa said the town's public market also collapsed, electric posts fell and roads cracked, AP reported.
