AACHEN, Germany (CNN) -- Three men detained on suspicions that they were planning bombing attacks in Germany were released Wednesday because of a lack of evidence.
Police arrested the men Tuesday after reports from a man who said he saw a bomb in an apartment in the southwestern city of Aachen. The man also said the three suspects, who were allegedly linked to an Islamic terrorist organization, hired him to courier the bomb to Berlin.
A spokesperson from the federal prosecutors office said that "the suspicions against the three men could not be substantiated."
On Tuesday, federal prosecutors released a statement which said that two apartments in Aachen were searched based on "concrete evidence" that suspected terrorists were planning attacks on unidentified targets in Germany. Subsequently, the men were released after explosives could not be found.
The statement also said the men were suspected of having formed a group "on the orders of the International Network of Islamists prepared to engage in violence."
