LONDON, England -- An actress who stars in a popular hospital "soap" on British TV has died after falling from a second-floor balcony, hospital officials said.
Laura Sadler, 22, who plays a nurse in Holby City, fell in Holland Park, west London, early on Sunday morning and had been in hospital in a critical condition ever since.
"We regret to announce the death of Laura Sadler. She died peacefully at 5:33 p.m. on 19 June, 2003. Her family were present at the bedside," a hospital spokesman said.
Actor George Calil, 30 was arrested on Sunday in connection with the incident and has been released on bail pending further inquiries.
Calil plays Sadler's on-screen drug dealing boyfriend in the hospital soap that attracts millions of viewers each week.
Sadler had appeared in TV programs Inspector Morse, Jane Eyre, Ruth Rendell Mysteries and Belfry Witches. The British-born actress made her TV debut in the children's program, Grange Hill.
