BATH, England -- The three tenors are in Bath, Somerset, to help celebrate the revival of spa culture in the city, and are giving a free concert.

The Tenors, Jose Carreras, Placido Domingo and Luciano Pavarotti, made a toast to the city of Bath with a glass of the thermal waters ahead of a free concert for 7,000 people in front of the city's Royal Crescent on Thursday night.

They were welcomed by hundreds of people as they arrived at Thermae Bath Spa, the city's new spa complex, where people will be able to bathe in the UK's only natural hot springs.

According to the UK Press Association, the tenors spoke of their pleasure at being able to perform together again. Pavarotti said: "For me, every time I meet these two gentlemen and share the stage with them it is an incredible experience.

"I think what is done here is really special. Everybody is going to be there, from all over the world if they want, and they hear a free concert," he said.

The open-air show, which will be watched by another 20,000 on giant screens in nearby Royal Victoria Park, could be the trio's last in the UK, after Pavarotti announced he planned to retire in 2005.

It is hoped the concert will raise money for charities such as WaterAid, Julian House for the homeless and the Dorothy House Hospice.

Every day more than a million liters of the hot, mineral-rich water rises from three springs -- used for healing, relaxation and pleasure from pre-Roman times.

The baths were closed by the local authority in 1978 after the withdrawal of NHS funding and a health scare.

In 1997 Bath and North East Somerset Council was awarded 7.78 million ($12.52 million) to support restoration work.
