LONDON, England (CNN) -- England football captain and Real Madrid star David Beckham has received an honor from Queen Elizabeth II.

Beckham, one of the most glamorous and photographed footballers, wore a three-piece morning suit with top hat to pick up the award at Buckingham Palace, London, Thursday.

He said receiving the Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) from the queen was a "great honor," especially among so many other worthy recipients.

"This is just an amazing day," he said. "It's a dream come true.

"It's definitely on a par with my football medals -- if not better."

Beckham was accompanied by wife Victoria, who was also in black sporting a designer hat with fine feathers.

"Victoria is so proud -- maybe she was even crying," he told the UK's Press Association, showing off the medal.

"And I'm so proud that she could be here today to share this with me."

Beckham's grandparents Joseph and Peggy West were also with him.

The England star, who moved to Spanish champions Real Madrid in the summer for a multi-million pound transfer, said the queen had asked him about all the traveling involved.

"I said it was not a problem," Beckham told SKY television.

He shrugged off reports that he and Victoria were to repeat their marriage vows, saying "We don't need to."

The midfielder said he would celebrate the award with a quiet lunch with his family.
