JERUSALEM (CNN) -- Israeli soldiers early Saturday opened fire on a taxi, killing a female passenger, after the driver ignored an Israeli roadblock in the West Bank, according to the Israel Defense Forces.
The driver was injured and is being investigated, the IDF said.
Palestinian medical sources said the 20-year-old Palestinian woman was on her way to university. The IDF says it is investigating the incident and that the taxi may have been on its way to carry out an attack.
The Israeli forces had set up roadblocks in the Nablus region after several warnings of an impending attack. Early Saturday, the taxi approached one roadblock set up near the village of Jet, between Nablus and Qaliqilya, the IDF said.
Israeli soldiers demanded the taxi driver to stop, but he ignored their orders and circumvented the roadblock, according to an IDF statement.
Israeli forces pursued the taxi and set up another roadblock. Soldiers fired warning shots but the taxi did not stop, so they opened fire on the vehicle, the IDF said.
The soldiers provided first aid to the wounded woman, who later died of her injuries.
