Teen sets Atlantic sail record
ANTIGUA -- A 15-year-old Briton has become the youngest single-handed sailor to cross the Atlantic Ocean. Sebastian Clover, from the Isle of Wight, sailed about 3,000 miles from Tenerife in the Canary Islands to Antigua, arriving on Sunday. He was greeted by a steel band, his father Ian, who won their transatlantic race when he landed in Antigua on Saturday, and mother Dolores who first suggested the pair race each other across the ocean. Rig problems on Sebastian Clover's yacht Reflection six days ago denied Clover the opportunity of closing the gap on his father, who was in an identical yacht. However, the repairs were effective enough to enable Clover to keep the gap down to a highly respectable 70 miles, or approximately 12 hours, after being at sea for 22 days. When Ian Clover reached port on Saturday he said his son was about 80 miles behind him. Race spokesman Simon Davies told the UK's Press Association on Sunday: "Sebastian is very excited and looking forward to a long soak in a hot bath. "Antigua has really pushed the boat out to welcome him, with a steel band to play him in." Apart from weather problems, the race had gone with little problems apart from the occasional slow winds, the presence of killer whales following the yachts and stormy weather which delayed the start. Sebastian Clover, whose father is sailing and ocean navigation instructor, has been training for the three-week race since he was 12.
