I have also been on the receiving end of a workplace bully. The problem I had with work was trying to convince them it was happening. My managers would not support me and kept making excuses for the bully's actions. D. Niemczycki, Hamilton, Canada

A company can create loyalty by being honest and genuine with employees, by recognizing the individual's worth at the workplace, giving them the freedom to be creative within the work's gambit and treating them as mature individuals. Providing a balanced work-life equation also helps in engaging employees to the firm, and thus building loyalty. Ranjan Matthew, Moovattupuzha, Kerala, India

Bullying in the high-tech work community is rampant. All kinds of people bullied me (though not physically), especially those in charge. I am not a troublemaker -- but I will stick up for myself. And it did not matter if I took detailed and reasonable reports up to the next level: they were in a clique with the others and immediately let you know you were wasting their time. The fact is people are insecure, and felt threatened by my work. So they try to hurt you in performance reviews. I have been let go often, just for sticking up for myself. People are closed-minded, and rather than admit to good reason at how idiotic their beliefs are, they'll go on a killing rampage. Tom Gleason, Bay Area, California

Because I am tall, nobody in the office believed when I told them another co-worker, who was female and petite, had hit me. They believed that I was distorting the story, and was responsible. I was incredibly stressed, and worried about how far she would go. Eventually, they laid me off. Later on, she started hitting other females, and eventually the company had to hire some sort of consultant on how to deal with firing her, in case she went mad. My life has never been the same since. I do not speak to people at my new job as I am afraid to bring out their ire. Michele Messner, Montreal, Canada

Being a negative interviewer shows a lack of loyalty to your company. Some people are also incapable of spotting good and stable staff, who may be apprehensive at interview, but have the potential of being wealth providers for the company. Remember your interview? Dr Harold Dresner, Karmiel, Israel

FLOSS (Free/Libre and Open Source Software) offers the best long-term value to business and governments. Cooperation is better than control. It will become the dominant business model of the 21st century. The only competing model will be Stalinistic tight-fisted IP patenting with complete disregard for customers rights and sensibilities. Chris Spencer, Macomb, Illinois

Sharing work globally, Outsourcing makes businesses more competitive, increasing profits and indirectly creates jobs at home. Ravi Kashyap, Nashville, Tennessee

When the employer takes an interest and is seen to take an interest in the employees comfort and conditions -- however small -- the work-turnover will improve. This was proved 50+ years ago. As an expression of character one should also be able to personalize one's work area. Dr Harold Dresner, Karmiel, Israel
