Founded: 1937
Headquarters: Winston-Salem, North Carolina

Operates 310 stores across the U.S., as well as selling to supermarkets, with 3,913 employees.

Produces 2.7 billion doughnuts a year in 25 varieties, including the best-selling "Krispy Kreme Hot Original Glazed". Larger stores can produce 120,000 doughnuts a day.

In 2003 opened first store in Europe at Harrods in London. Also has stores in Canada, Mexico and Australia.

Other than my family, Joseph Campbell.

What's your biggest mistake?

Of those I would admit, it would be underestimating the popularity of Krispy Kreme when we began to expand outside the southeastern United States.

Is management an art or a science?

It is an art that employs science.

What do you reach for on your desk when the fire alarm goes off?

Born: 1952 in Salisbury, North Carolina.

  • Started working for Krispy Kreme in 1977 after graduating from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, becoming a director in 1994.
  • Served as president since 1992, Chief Executive Officer since 1998 and Chairman of the Board since 1999.
  • Guided company through its greatest period of expansion, including an initial public offering in 2000 and the development of overseas markets.
  • A member of the Board of Visitors of the University of North Carolina and serves on the executive committee of the University's Educational Foundation. Also a member of the Board of Visitors of the Babcock Graduate School of Management of Wake Forest University.
  • He says: "I grew up with Krispy Kremes and even had a Krispy Kreme birthday cake for my 16th birthday. So I am a fan for life, and I can't wait to get my first doughnut every day I come to work."
