LONDON, England -- Former Pogues frontman Shane MacGowan is recovering from facial injuries he suffered when he was allegedly attacked in a London pub.

The 46-year-old singer was assaulted at the Joiner's Arms pub in central London on Monday evening, police sources said.

The Evening Standard newspaper reported that MacGowan suffered a fractured cheekbone after being kicked, punched and hit with a metal bar.

A Scotland Yard spokesman said: "The motive remains unknown. No property was taken from the victim."

MacGowan was taken to the nearby St Thomas' Hospital, but did not stay for treatment.

Two men, aged 20 and 21, were arrested and later released on bail, police said.

The Anglo-Irish singer formed the Pogues in 1982, fusing punk and folk music. The band had a UK top 5 chart hit with "Fairy Tale of New York," featuring Kirsty McColl, in 1987.

MacGowan left the Pogues in 1991 and has since performed with his own backing band, the Popes.
